Paying Lip Service to the Newest Instagrammable Wall in Calgary
When I was on my way to Inglewood this Stampede, I nearly screamed when I saw the new Corridor of Connection off of 9th Avenue. It was this blogger’s dream come true. An endless supply of Instagrammable wall space in Calgary with an overdose of bright, beautiful colour! Only a week passed before I was able to drive back over to take some photos and meet the artist responsible for this creation.
I had a total fan girl moment when I first met Michelle as she was finishing up her two-block mural on 4th Street SE. I say two blocks, because it is the length of one block on both sides of the street. It’s a project called the Corridor of Connection and it has taken her seven weeks to complete practically solo. She was commissioned by the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation to take this black piece of concrete and turn it into literally a true work of art. Street art has been popping up like crazy in Calgary over the past few years and it’s awesome to have Michelle showcase her talent.
Michelle chatted with me for awhile about what inspired her for this project. She has so many elements present. Look for the red hearts in each of the geometric Suarez mosaics. The giant butterfly represents a story she was told by a First Nations Elder. Her twin sister Stephanie is also an artist but their styles are very different. Michelle is more abstract and colourful while Stephanie paints more scenic elements.
After following Michelle Hoogveld on Instagram, I realized that I’d actually photographed at another one of her murals before. It happens to be my favourite and you’ve seen it many times in my feed. It’s actually a shipping container located behind a community centre in Montgomery. I’m sure you’ll agree, Michelle has some serious talent!
Wondering about the details of this outfit? Unfortunately all of the items aren’t available online anymore. My accessories are from Stella Dot and romper is from The Mint Julep. There are still lots of cute clutches and rompers available at both online shops, so go get creative!
Love finding places to photograph? Well check out my last post with the Rainbow Bridge underpass, also in Calgary!
