How to Grow Your Instagram Account
I get a lot of questions about how to grow and build a business through Instagram so today I am sharing the tips and tricks that took me over a year to figure out!
Build your brand. This was the hardest thing for me to figure out on Instagram. There are literally millions of accounts, how will you stand out? What is your brand? This means, what type of things do you want to consistently post about? If you have a look at my account, I consistently post about lipstick, coffee, flowers, arm candy mixed with Jamberry. Maybe you love travel? Maybe you take great photos of your kids? Do you cook or bake? Decorate? Draw? Read? What are you passionate about? Be creative!
Edit. I can’t say this enough. So many of my iPhone photos start out dark, dull and shadowed. Play around with editing until you get the look you want. People enjoy bright, clear photos. It takes some practice but once you get the “formula” you like, you can apply it to every photo you post. I use the Instagram editing tool before posting. Other apps to try are VSCO, Snapseed, TouchRetouch and ColorSnap. Be consistent. Try and use the same one or two filters for the photo you post. This will help all of your photos to have the same look and feel.
Curate. Think of it like hanging a bunch of photos on a gallery wall. When people view your profile, they will quickly glance at your “square”, your most recent 9 posted photos. In that few seconds, they will decide whether or not to follow you. Is aesthetically pleasing? To figure that out before posting, I use the VSCO app to upload photos prior to posting to ensure that the layout flows and my photos look good where they are placed. This simple little tip changed my Instagram!
Engage. Get yourself noticed. Like and comment on other people’s photos. Follow people with similar interests. Search hashtags that are relevant to your brand (like #manicure) and then engage with those photos. Don’t wait for people to find you, find them! IG is an absolutely amazing community. I have made friendships with other women I’ve never even met before. We chat and have even extended our friendships to Facebook. Find those people for you!
Be discreet. Try not to make every post about selling your product. People will get tired of it pretty quickly and won’t hesitate to unfollow you. You don’t want to annoy people. Try posting a photo of your mani and write something like “Beating the Monday blues with a new mani.” Wait for people to comment on your pretty nails and then offer them a sample by commenting back to them. I don’t like spam in my inbox and I definitely don’t like it in my Instagram feed.
Post. Try and post at least twice a day, but no more than four times. Space them out throughout the day. This will also give you a good idea of what times receive more engagement. Make note of which photos get the most likes so that you can do another similar one in the future.
Hashtag. You can use up to 30 different hashtags per photo. It’s important to do it in the comment section immediately after posting your photo (then it doesn’t look spammy). I copy and paste mine in from the Notes section on my phone. Choose ones that are relevant to your photo. Make a list so that you can refer back to it! Tag all brand items in your photos. People love to see where you buy things! It also gives you the chance for big companies to repost your photos to get more followers (like this one that Jamberry reposted on their Instagram!).
Be patient. Things don’t happen overnight. The first 1,000 followers take the longest to get but after that, your count will grow faster and faster. You can participate in chat loops or giveaways to help boost your followers too. Be polite. There is kind of an etiquette associated with Instagram. I say: “good vibes only.” Say thank you when someone leaves you a compliment! Throw your kind words around like confetti. DO NOT use other people’s photos. Ask that person if you have permission to use their photo and then tag them in the photo and in the comments so that the person is aware that you have used it.
Be you. Instagram is my favourite social media outlet. So much so that I rarely use Facebook anymore. It’s my spot to showcase beautiful moments and my love for all things pretty. Don’t conform to make your account into something that doesn’t express who you are and what you love. Make it a beautiful little celebration of all things you!
