I started this blog about a year and a half ago because I wanted to inspire other stay-at-home moms to not give in to the “mom-rut”. As moms, we are unanimously tired. There’s barely enough time to drink a cup of coffee and scarf down a piece of toast in the mornings, let alone time to shower, get dressed, do your hair and put on make-up. Well, I’m here to tell you, MAKE TIME. And this is why….
This week I’m sharing my first video hair tutorial! I was way out of my comfort zone in creating a YouTube video but I always find tutorials way easier to follow when you can see the flow from beginning to end.
I LOVE the Pull Through Side French Braid. I always hear people saying that they want the dutch braid hairstyle but they don’t know how to French braid. So here is your answer: this is the cheater version that yields the same look withOUT having to braid.
HOW TO WEAR A ONESIE A.K.A. ROMPER
It’s ROMPER season! I am home from California, refreshed from a beautiful stay in Laguna Beach with my extremely lovely and hospitalable Aunt and cousins. My best friend Kristen and I enjoyed 5 days of lounging, eating and shopping. If you haven’t been to the cozy, quaint and beautiful beach town of Laguna Beach then I highly recommend it.
One of the things that Kristen and I both packed were rompers. They are one of my favourite summer outfit choices. It’s effortless and easy… a complete outfit in one! They are GREAT for traveling as they take up almost zero room in your suitcase. I personally love them because they look chic but are comfortable to wear while chasing around my boys all day. This blue and red onesie is from one of my fave, affordable online shops Sheinside.com !
Tips and Tricks to look best in your Romper:
1. Add a belt! Don’t lose your waistline and avoid looking shapeless. Choose one that comes with a belt or add your own.
2. Watch the length. If you have a long torso, make sure you try it on in-store or check out the measurements if shopping online. There’s nothing that looks worse then shorts that are riding up on you!
3. Dress it up or down with heels, flats or sandals. If you are on the shorter or heavier side, elongate your legs with heels!
4. Layer with a kimono or blazer for cooler mornings and evenings.
Whatever style you choose, don’t be shy of colour this season! Black is always slimming and flattering but bright colours are so fun for the summer.
And thanks to my bestie for taking these blog photos!
Turn Heads In This Flared Skirt
Flared Skirt – Sheinside.com / Shirt – Aerie (sold out) but same one here from Missguided / Shoes – Louboutin / Serenity Stones Drop Earrings in Green – Stella & Dot / Clutch – “The Shift” Stella & Dot
This post will be short and sweet. The boys are both lying down for naps and I
have t-minus 50 minutes before it’s mommy go-time again!
This beautiful skirt is a show-stopper. Exude confidence and turn heads with its vibrant colour and flared
pleats. Now wait for the best part… it has
pockets!! And the second best part is that it is only $20 ($26 CDN)! It also comes in black, and blue. Wear a high-waisted flared skirt with a
tight-fitting shirt that can be tucked in, in order to give your figure great
form. If you are a little more daring, try a short crop top (I like this one). Finish the
look off with some big statement earrings and high heels.
I wore this outfit out to dinner last weekend to celebrate my 5-year
anniversary with my hubby. I promise you that it is hard not feel slightly fabulous in this pop of colour! After a week or work or taking care of the kids, it feels good to dress up and get out. This look is perfect for those such occasions!
Style size note: This skirt is only available online. Mine is size small and fits quite snug, so I would suggest a size up!
How Do YOU Make Marriage Last?
“And in the end, the love you take is
equal to the love you make.”
-John Lennon and
Happy 5th anniversary to my husband Trevor! Here we are 5 years later. 5 years after our friends and family vacationed in the Mayan Riviera to watch us say “I do”.
5 years after we officially joined our lives together. 5 years later: a home in Calgary and 2
I’m no relationship expert and 5 years of marriage is a long
way from 50 but I am proud of these 5 years.
What a learning experience it has been for both of us. Marriage can be fabulous! You have someone to share your life with,
your hopes, your stories, your dreams. Trevor is
always the first person I call with good news because he is my best friend. Our idea of a wonderful evening
is a glass of wine and catching up on one of our “shows”, just spending time together. I love my husband. I am still confident that I picked a caring, kind and most of all GOOD person to share my life with.
On the flip side, I’m not a sugar coater (as some of you
may know), so I’m going to say it:
marriage is hard work! Throw children into the mix and it becomes 10
times harder. I notice a direct
correlation of my husband and I’s moods against how well our children are
behaving. The terrible twos nearly broke
us! Some nights, after Trevor has worked
10-12 hours downtown and I have worked taking care of the kids all day, we use
our last bit of energy just to crawl into bed.
How do you still have time for each other? How do you keep the romance
So in saying that, what makes a marriage work? What makes it last? I asked my Facebook friends to weigh in
because none of us are experts in this field but we all have advice to offer.
I LOVE all the comments that I received. Clearly, people think about this sort of
thing everyday. There was an underlying
theme that everyone seems to mention: respect, trust, kindness and
Here are a few of my favourites:
“Never say a bad word about your spouse to anyone else…
even when you want to kill him.”
“Maintain the romance once the kids come.”
“Remember that they aren’t perfect….But perfect for you.”
“Never go to bed angry, always talk things through.”
“Know how to appreciate each other.”
“Try to respect each other’s opinion even if you do not
“Date nights with each other! At least once a month.”
“Admit your mistakes and say you’re sorry sincerely, do more
than say I love you.”
“Don’t take any argument too seriously.”
“100% acceptance of your spouse and leave room for their
“Remember you are on the same team, and everything you do is
for the good of the team!”
“Hold hands while you are walking, tell each other every day
how much you love one another.”
“Be kind, and know how to say I am sorry.”
“Always ask yourselves “Is the juice worth the squeeze?”
These are all things that we need to stop to remind ourselves of some days. I know, I do. In an attempt to reconnect and have some time alone together, Trevor and I
are heading to Italy for 10 days. Traveling
is something we both love. In our busy days of life and kids, it will be so nice to pause and try and rekindle that love. I can’t wait for it.
My weigh in?
Keep yourself happy. I felt that
after having the boys, I lost a bit of the “old me”. My identity became 90% wife and mother. That’s why I started Harper’s Hats. That’s why I’ve recently started blogging. It makes me happy. It gives me an outlet and allows me to grow as an individual. We need to be happy with ourselves to share that happiness with others. Some days are tough but others are wonderful. We just have to try and focus on the good (even though it’s easier said than done somedays)!
Style Side Note: My new necklace that I received as a beautiful gift. Our initials, the guardian angel charm and our wedding day anniversary engraved on the ID Tag from Stella & Dot. LOVE this idea for any occasion!
Do you have any advice to offer? What makes your marriage work?
“I believe in process. I believe in four seasons. I believe that winter’s tough, but spring’s coming. I believe that there’s a growing season. And I think that you realize that in life, you grow. You get better.” ~SteveSoutherland
The anticipation of Spring is on everyone’s mind. It’s that time when you are at the clinch ofgetting out of your winter gear and feeling the thong of your flip flop between
your toes again. It has been a tough
winter but the thought of warmer weather and bright tulips sprouting up into a
new season, brings a smile to my face. When
you live in Canada, you wait all year for this moment. The problem is just when
you think it’s safe to put out your sandals, we get another snowfall. I don’t know about you but I’m
tired of tripping over clunky dirty boots cluttering up my laundry room!
In Calgary, we typically have to layer our clothing all year
long. Cool mornings and evenings always
make me carry a cardigan or jacket around. If you are thinking about transitioning your
wardrobe for spring, add a bright colour (I always love coral, teal or yellow) or light neutral blazer over your top
and pair it with a light coloured pant.
It’s time to but away the black!
Blush pink is a popular colour this season and I fell in
love with this beautiful sequin and lace shirt from Express. Of course, it is already sold out, but don’t stress, I have picked out three others that are just as pretty and they are all 40% off right now! Adding a blazer
to this look makes it perfect for work. Roll
the cuff for a more casual look!
Here are my favourite boyfriend blazers and sequin tanks for spring. This bit of sparkle really
gives your look a bit of glam. No matter what your
style category is: Expressive, Romantic or Classic, I’ve found the perfect look
Shirt (Sold out) – Express but it is in black! / Blazer – Winners (last season) / Deco Drop Earrings – Stella & Dot / Jeans – Garage (only $19.50!!) / Watch – Fossil / Shoes – Aldo (last season flip flops but I love these!)
Hope you all have a wonderful Easter with your families!
P.S. Could I have a more beautiful back drop?
Casual Comfort in Canada
Distressd Boyfriend Jeans – Garage Clothing / Madden Girl Shoes at Winners Canada or here / Black knit sweater – Forever 21 / Somervell Necklace in Gold, Nancy Stud earring in Gold – Stella & Dot / Jamberry Nails in Natural Leopard / Nars Lipstick in “Greta”/ Watch – Fossil / Sunglasses from Derek Cardigan – Clearly Contacts
Distressed denim is everywhere this season. I have been eyeing up this casual look forthe past month, trying to find the right pair of jeans for me. It was a bit of a long week, so I took alittle retail therapy trip to the mall just to walk around by myself with for
an hour. Sans children. 🙂 I find it a bit difficult to shop right now because the Spring clothes are arriving in Canada, even though we won’t be putting on a pair of shorts for at least another 3 months in Calgary. The upside is that there are great sales to be had with the season switch-over!
After wandering around with my Caramel Macchiato I stopped into Garage Clothing and found these jeans.
Boyfriend jeans are made to be worn low on the hips, with a slight baggy
look. This pair from Garage are super
soft, comfortable and at an unbeatable price of $49! Plus, right now they are offering Buy One Get
One half off on all their jeans! I would
recommend going one size down in this particular style as they do fit big. They would look great paired with a cute heeled bootie but I was really liking this casual slip-on shoe.
These Steve Madden leopard shoes were a great find at
Winners for $39. They are comfortable and
great for walking your dog or chasing your children around.
I kept this look casual with a simple knit sweater. I grabbed this one from
Forever 21 for $7. That’s right $7. As I mentioned, if you have the patience to sift through clearance racks right now, you can find some great deals… you just may want to leave your little ones at home. My boys always end up whining if I am in a store longer than 5 minutes. I’ve added this simple statement necklace
from Stella & Dot “The Somervell” to keep it girlie and add a little
Another piece from Stella & Dot is this great bag called “The Shift”. If you check back a couple posts, I am holding the clutch that can be zipped on or off the front of the bag. I love the versatility, it’s like getting two bags in one!
I know half of North American is piled under snow right now so I included the links above to shop this look at home. Or if you are getting unusually gorgeous weather like us in Calgary, get out and take advantage of these great deals!
