Kananaskis, Alberta
This summer, I have to admit that I avoided heading to the Rocky Mountains. The reasons are two-fold. Firstly, the flocks of tourists make things so crowded, especially when trying to take photographs without dozens of people in your background. Secondly, my kids aren’t the most appreciative of the breath-taking backdrops and my husband and I couldn’t seem to find time to get away together.
Heading into Kananaskis yesterday, I was mad at myself for not getting out for the past two months. I’m always stunned and reminded of the sheer beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Kananaskis is pretty consistently underrated and over-shadowed by Banff and Lake Louise. But it is just as beautiful! You don’t have to pay fees to visit as it is not in Banff National Park plus it is also less frequented by visitors. September and October are the best times to visit in my opinion. Yes, it’s a little chillier but it’s not nearly as busy!

Barrier Lake
Barrier Lake is only a few munites off the Trans Canada Highway. In trying to find a specific area to photograph, I ended up getting lost and driving the length of the Barrier Lake. The upside is that I ended up finding multiple locations that were each different but equally stunning! I’ve included a Google Map above so that you can easily find all three locations, click on each point to see the photo that I captured. The first two points have handy parking lots that will definitely fill up on busy days. The third point can be captured by pulling over on the side of the road. This time of year is even more pretty with the bright autumn yellow and orange foliage.
I highly recommend visiting in the evening right after the sun has set to get the perfect lighting. These locations will likely be completely vacant as well.
