In the dead of winter, I really start to notice my skin looking dry and dull. Add in sunspots, fine lines, and wrinkles and it’s become quite the challenge to get the coverage and glow that I once had! As we age, we have to spend a little more time on our skin but it’s still possible to get beautiful skin that radiates under makeup. It’s easy and I’m inviting you to give it a try! Here are eight flawless foundation application tips that you can incorporate into your daily makeup routine.
Flawless Foundation Application Tips
I think that most people are under the assumption that finding the perfect foundation is the secret to giving you a flawless look. While choosing a good foundation helps, it is actually your SKINCARE routine that will give you that smooth, untextured look that you’re looking for. In this post, you’re going to learn that you may have to spend a little more time pampering your skin but the results will be worth it.
Being stuck at home for the majority of 2020, gave me more time to really pour some self-care into my face. I’ll let you in on the number one secret to flawless makeup: MOISTURIZING! I touched on the basics in my previous post: 3 Beauty Secrets to Flawless Skin but I want to go through my daily makeup application steps more thoroughly here. Incorporating a good facial cleanser, toner, serum, and moisturizer into your evening routine is also crucial. Not only will it help with your makeup application, it has huge anti-ageing benefits too!
Cleanse and Exfoliate
Good morning!!! Exfoliation is a step that many people forget about and it should be done in the morning two to three times per week. Typically, I cleanse with a cotton pad and micellar water after showering. This gets rid of any leftover dirt, oil, and eye makeup from the previous day. Then, I scrub with a gritty exfoliation polish! This will rid the surface of your skin of dead skin cells. These cells clog your pores, cause breakouts, and leave your skin looking dull. If your skin is feeling particularly dry, especially in the winter, then exfoliating may be the cure to getting your glow back.

Moisturize
The key to the perfect foundation base! Before applying face cream, I apply two drops of a hydrating facial oil, avoiding the upper eye area. I LOVE a dewy look. If you have oily skin, then you may want to skip this step in the daytime and apply only at night. Moisture will help keep your makeup looking fresh all day long as your skin naturally dehydrates during the day. Next, layer on a good, hydrating moisturizer. It’s okay to feel a little over-hydrated at this point. This base will help your makeup last all day long. Nothing is worse than flaking, caked-on makeup!

Beauty Sponge
A beauty blending sponge might just become your new best friend for makeup application. If you haven’t tried one of these makeup applicators yet, they are pretty much foolproof! Submerse your sponge under the tap and allow it to soak up water. Next, squeeze out excess water so that your sponge is damp. Now you’re ready for primer and foundation!

Primer
Give yourself the perfect base with a primer. Primers absorb access oil, minimize pores, and helps your makeup last all day. It’s a must for creating a flawless foundation look! To apply, squeeze a pea-size amount directly onto your blending sponge or the back of your hand, and evenly dab all over your face, including your eyelids. The larger, round part of your sponge is best for applying primer and foundation.

Foundation
Now, place a dime-sized amount of foundation directly onto your blending sponge, face, or onto the back of your hand and apply as needed. As with the primer: DABBING IS KEY! This will allow the foundation to be applied thick enough to hide imperfections and give you a very even look. I love both of the foundations linked below as they are hydrating and perfect for creating that healthy glow. If you have oily skin, they can both be purchased in “matte” formulas. They also have “buildable” coverage meaning that you can apply a second coat if needed.

Concealer
Follow up by dabbing concealer directly onto my face: inner corners of my eyelids, under my eyes, around my nose, and to cover any blemishes or sunspots. Use the pointed tip of your beauty blender to cover these smaller areas. Use the side of the sponge to then apply your blush and highlighter!

Powder
After applying my eye makeup, it’s important to set your look with a translucent powder. This will also soak up any access moisture so that you aren’t left looking too shiny. Use a powder brush or dip the rounded end of your beauty blender into the powder. Gently distribute evenly over your face. Choose a powder with some shimmer for an illuminated look!

Setting Spray
Setting spray is designed to hold your makeup in place all day long. It’s only meant to be a light mist so make sure to hold the bottle at arms-length away from your face when you spray. What I like about this is that you can also use it to refresh your look later in the day if needed.
