Every August, Calgary kicks off BUMP, the Beltline Urban Mural Project. It funds artists to bring colour and culture to Calgary by painting murals in the Beltline region, just south of downtown. Not only does it make our city more beautiful but it gives us lots of cool backgrounds to take photos! So grab your friend, or your tripod and start exploring these new Instagram murals in Calgary! I’ve included seven of my favourites, plus a map on how to find them.

Instagram Murals in Calgary
Let me start by saying that there are many new murals in Calgary this year and I’m only covering a few here. When I use the term “Instagrammable”, it means that I feel that these are walls that would be perfect for an Instagram photo background. Many new paintings were completed on building walls this summer but some of them are on such a large scale, that it’s difficult to get a photo in front of them or to capture the entire picture. Others may be high up on buildings pr parking garages, again making it hard to capture. I urge you to check out the BUMP website and still seek out these great muralists anyways! There are a few more that are yet to be completed so watch my Instagram for new photos. To find each location, don’t forget to check out the Google Map at the end of this post!
“Love, Said the People” by @michellehoogveld
One of the most celebrated local artists in Calgary, Michelle’s work is highly recognizable. I always tell her that she keeps my Instagram in business with the creation of so many bright and colourful walls in Calgary.
“Sneaky Peak” by @sarahslaughterart
How fun are these little sneaky black cats peering from behind these birdhouses!? Love this addition to the Beltline!
A Tropical Paradise by @bravotoner
Of course, Calgary needs a parrot! According to the BUMP Instagram post, “In the ancient Chinese art of Feng Shui, the parrot is a powerful symbol of opportunity and a bearer of good news, it draws positive energy and keeps away the negative.” I think that’s exactly what 2020 needs right now!
“After the Flood” by @jameswyper
This is actually an older mural that I’ve used numerous times but never mapped for you! These colourful squares are all around this red brick apartment building.
Coffee Mural by @tavukciyan
Grab a cup of coffee and pose in front of this neat new wall just north of 17th Avenue.
Mystical Beast by @sluggerstudio
This one may be one of those murals that isn’t easy to capture because it’s so big! I included it because it is literally on the other side of the building of the one above. Plus I love the colours on this mystical beast!
Lululemon by @michellehoogveld
This geometric mural was completed a couple of years ago for Lululemon, but absolutely still worth adding to this list. Anything created my Michelle Hoogveld is worth checking out.
