It’s finally here! Instagram has just rolled out a new option that is giving you the chance to change your feed back to chronological order. Meaning that instead of seeing the posts that Instagram chooses to show you, you can now see them in the order in which they are posted. Read on to find step-by-step instructions on how to make this change and more importantly, WHY you should change your Instagram feed to chronological order.
Why You Should Change Your Instagram Feed to Chronological
I’ve been on Instagram for over ten years now and although I am not an official expert, I do pay a lot of attention to how the app works. You might remember about five years ago, Instagram decided to make its platform mimic that of Facebook. Instead of showing you everyone’s posts and updates that you follow, they changed it so that you would only see the posts of the accounts that you most interact with.
Influencers and bloggers have complained about this change from the very beginning, stating that the average user loves to scroll their feeds without liking or commenting. Without the necessary engagement, it made most of us disappear from your feeds altogether. It may not seem like that big of a deal but content creators want their content to be SEEN. It’s extremely frustrating when you’ve worked so hard on something that isn’t even given that chance.
So why should you change your Instagram feed to chronological? First and foremost, you won’t BELIEVE the number of people that Instagram has been “hiding” from you. Instagram is famous for favouring certain accounts over others. There are likely a lot of accounts that you haven’t seen in years. Literally! This week when I switched over, I was shocked that I didn’t recognize half of the accounts that I was seeing. It made me so excited to see fresh content and faces, instead of the same old 50-100 accounts that I’m typically only shown on a day-to-day basis. It inspired me to interact with these people immediately! The hope for creators like myself is that people will start to see our photos and videos again.
How to Change Your Instagram to Chronological in Canada
Step-by-step instructions on how to change your feed to chronological order.
- Update your app to the latest version.
- From your profile, tap the home button (little house) on the bottom, left-hand corner.
- Tap the word “Instagram” in the top left-hand corner.
- You will see a drop-down menu that gives you two options: “Following” or “Favourites”
- Choose “Following”
- Pull down to refresh your feed and you will now see that posts are shown starting from the most recent one!
What’s the Catch?
Unfortunately, Instagram isn’t going to make it that simple for you. In order to use this Following” option, you have to toggle the button EVERY SINGLE TIME you open the app. I am really hoping that they make this a permanent option. I’m guessing Instagram wants to see how popular this new option is for users.

How to Use the New Favourites Option on Instagram
If you choose the new “Favourites” Instagram Option from the drop-down menu, you will revert back to see the accounts that you interact with the most. Instagram has already decided most of these for you, by who you interact with the most. But try this: tap the three-starred list on the top right-hand corner. This is your “Favourites” list. You’ll probably notice that there are already quite a few accounts that have been favourited on your behalf. You can now add and remove up to 50 accounts to this list. I like this option because now I have actual control over who I want to see more of instead of someone else deciding for me.
In summary? Go try the change and see what you think! Drop me a DM on Instagram and let me know your thoughts!
